Welcome, AJ! Please tell us about your book.
Erebus Dawning is a female forward villain origin story about Nyx Marcus who must risk her humanity when she discovers she is an AI/human hybrid and face a queen to save her family.
Cool! What sparked the idea for the book?
I was watching this anime, Neo Angelique Abyss… And I noted how overpowered the characters were. So, I wondered if I could write a book where the main character was basically a god… Of course, I only took inspiration (and the grounding in Greek mythology) from the anime. It would have been weird if I had tried to appropriate that story.
How long did it take for you to write the book? Did you do have to do any research?
It took me approximately a year and a half to write the book to the point where Aethon took a chance on it. I didn’t do any strenuous research, but I did have to look up what happens to the human body when exposed to the vacuum of space. It’s gross.
For you, what’s the hardest thing about writing? What do you love most about it?
Drafting is probably the hardest. But it’s also the most fun. I’m a pantser to the core, and my stories all come from a blank page, so I get to tell myself stories every day when I’m drafting.
If you were speaking to someone who hasn’t read your writing before, why should they want to read Erebus Dawning?
I’d say reading a character who you expect to be a hero, who gradually turns into something you want to loathe but can’t and is an undeniably unreliable narrator is an intriguing twist on the space opera main character.
Where can readers find you (website, blog, social media, etc.)?
Thank you, AJ! Erebus Dawning releases on May 11 and is available for preorder now!
Those who can destroy a world can control the universe.
Everyone wants the Star of Erebus. Space-pirate Nyx Marcus is no exception. With it, she can prove to her father that she is worthy of his legacy.
But she’s come up empty-handed aboard the space-ship Thanatos and now Malcam, her father’s First Officer, is mutinying. As Nyx flees with a loyal skeleton crew, she discovers that the planet-killing weapon, named after one of the seven gods, is more than what it seems.
Erebus isn’t a simple weapon. It’s an ancient AI and a technological god.
With the oppressive Queen of the Protectorate and new pirate captain Malcam searching for the Thanatos and Erebus, the AI god has more surprises for Nyx. Waking dormant AI code in Nyx’s blood, Erebus reveals they are family and Nyx is the head of the Seven Stars pantheon. Now Nyx must learn to control her power without sacrificing her own humanity or give her enemies a new way to oppress the known universe and lose the family she holds dear.
