Welcome, Dianne! How would you describe The Silence in the Sound?
The Silence in the Sound is a women’s fiction coming of age story woven with addiction, love, and celebrity about young nurse Georgette who, to escape her past, heads where the memories won’t follow—Martha’s Vineyard Island.
Actual events inspired my book as I worked for a well-known author on the island, William Styron, a Pulitzer-prize winner who’d written Sophie’s Choice.
What sparked the idea for this book?
My life and experiences, of course, and the incredible beauty of Martha’s Vineyard. Also, my time with an inspiring man, William Styron, showed me you could turn the darkness inside ourselves and the tragedies of life into something beautiful and not be afraid to do so. As much as it was challenging, it was also incredibly cathartic.
How long did it take for you to write the book?
Oh my…. Okay, about six years of taking notes and a solid two of writing. I think writing about personal things can take such a long time. Or maybe it’s just me. Ha!
Are you working on a new project? Please tell us about it.
Yes! I am also a poet, and my poetry book, Unheard Whispers, was recently published. It’s a short collection about growing up in addiction. What’s more exciting is that part of the proceeds of my poetry book and my novel will go to the Robert F. Kennedy Community Alliance organization and their division that helps children and families affected by addiction in Massachusetts, where I’m from.
I’m also currently working on my second novel and am about five chapters in. It’s a dark subject, so it’s another challenge to write.

The Silence in the Sound
Finding inspiration where she least expects it, one woman’s life is about to change forever.
