Welcome, Corey! Please tell us a bit about your book.
Corey, a Type A perfectionist, creates an iron-clad, heal-from-heartbreak checklist to fast forward to her happily ever after but realizes when past issues bubble up and two potential soulmates emerge, it takes more than a plan to heal, move on, and find “the one.”
What drew you to write a memoir about this experience? What made you want to tell this particular story? What do you hope readers will gain or learn from reading about your experience?
After going through a heart-wrenching breakup, I started chronicling my experiences in trying to navigate heartache and later on, my quest to find true love.
The story began as a potential magazine article mired in satire, absurdity, and even some sorrow. But, when my journey kept unfolding in highly unexpected ways, it seemed a short publication wasn’t in the cards. So, I kept writing, tracking my life for an entire year, until it felt like it came to a natural conclusion, which resulted in a full-length memoir! I’m grateful I continued writing, as my book turned out to be exactly what I would have wanted to read when I was struggling with my breakup.
My hope is that readers will find solace, company, and validation in their experiences with love, relationships, and heartbreak as they journey along with mine.
What was your research process like for The Soulmate Strategy?
Since I was writing a memoir as life was happening, there was little research I needed to do. However, I did fact check in real-time and afterwards with the other characters and made sure the chronology followed along with my Google calendar!
From your perspective, what’s the hardest thing about writing and researching? And what do you love most about it?
The hardest part for me in writing is trying to discern the content that is most contributory to the whole story. This was particularly difficult as I wanted to share every experience. But, I realized some were far more important than others in terms of the larger narrative. Thus, I had to let some go, even after writing full chapters on them.
What I love about writing, though, is the feeling I get when I find the exact words to say what I want, especially after having struggled to find them and subsequently unsuccessfully rewriting parts over and over. Reaching that point is exhilarating as I know my story will be told precisely how I experienced it.
In addition, I love impacting others and want my writing to matter, whether by being inspired by my story, informed by my content, or moved by my experiences.
Any new writing projects in the works?
I am the co-host of the podcast, Rock That Relationship! I love discussing poignant topics on all things related to relationships. I’m also finishing up an interactive self-help book about moving from heartbreak to healing that serves as a follow-on to my memoir.
What was the last book you read? What did you think of it?
All the Way to the River by Elizabeth Gilbert. She is a phenomenal writer who selects the perfect words to tell a deeply moving and captivating story. I could feel myself inside her life as she shared her experiences. Her talent to pull in readers is like nothing I have ever felt before from a writer.

The Soulmate Strategy
Days after Corey’s breakup, a photo of her ex wrapped in the arms of another woman goes viral on Facebook. Confronted with this gleeful boast about “happily ever after,” Corey, a forty-something-year-old lesbian, decides that she can’t live in a state of perpetual loneliness, plagued with the burden of her own failure in finding happiness and love.
Armed with her meticulously crafted checklist, Corey embarks on a mission to heal, move on, and find “the one.” But no matter how many items she checks off her list, or how faithfully she follows the sage wisdom of psychics, her breakup coach, and the legendary rapper Eminem, her hope in finding her one true love begins to fade away—until she’s suddenly torn between two.
Now, with her heart unexpectedly on the line, Corey must find out what she really wants—and where her true happiness lies.
