Welcome, Kathleen! How would you describe Intercessions?
When young Corianne Dempsey and her best friend, Rebecca, are approached by a stranger on the way to school, only one girl makes it home. Now a grown woman, Corianne must confront what she has forgotten about that terrifying day before the fragments of her past destroy her.
If you were speaking to someone who hasn’t read your writing before, why should they want to read Intercessions?
I like reading character-driven, psychological fiction, so it’s no surprise that’s what I write. My writing has been described as noir and very evocative, so if you love a dark, twisty story that takes you deep into the interior of a character while simultaneously paying attention to sense of place, this one is for you!
Fill in the blank: Readers who like [blank] will also like Intercessions.
Readers who liked The End of Everything by Megan Abbot or Jess Lourey’s Unspeakable Things will also like Intercessions.
What do you hope readers will take away from this story?
I hope readers connect with this story of a forgotten victim and reflect on the ways things done to us in our past by those with power, whether intentional or not, shape our sense of self. If I’ve done it well, this is both a thrilling read and a story about healing from our own sense of brokenness.
Any words of wisdom you give your pre-published writer self (or to a new writer)?
Never write your first draft with the audience, prospective publisher or inner critic over your shoulder. Write the book you want to write. There is time for feedback and revision later. Don’t censor yourself.
Are you working on a new project? Please tell us about it.
I’m halfway through the first draft of my next book. It is the first book in what I see as a new mystery/thriller series. I am superstitious about saying too much at this point in the process, but I’m smiling.
