Hello, Eloise! Please tells us more about your book.

Sometimes the most dangerous place to be is in the loving arms of your family. Just how long it takes for two intrepid detectives to figure this is the deciding factor on whether or not Julia Webster and her boyfriend, Hugo, survive.

What sparked the idea for The Iron Pendulum?

The nightmare that inspired the story. I had a recurring dream that my parents had hidden from me the fact that there were three children in our family, not two! Every time I stood in our kitchen, I could see the iron swinging from its cord just in front of the kitchen sink. Of course, writing the story took my nightmare to a different place, but the title for the book remained the same, The Iron Pendulum ticking away the hours before the truth was revealed.

How long did it take for you to write the book? Did you do have to do any research?

I first wrote the details of my dream in my twenties, when it occurred. Years later, I discovered the paper with my dream written on it and decided to create a story from it. I participated in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and drafted the story in November. Then it took almost a year to edit and publish the story as it is now.

For you, what’s the hardest thing about writing?

Finding the time to sit in one place and complete a thought. As a mum of four with a part-time job and studying for a degree, I find it difficult to complete my writing tasks on most days.  It becomes more of a challenge and is rather frustrating when I have a great thought but no time to jot it down.

What do you love most about it?

The opportunity to share the crazy worlds that exist in my brain and share the hidden stories that cry to come out from the darkness within.

If you were speaking to someone who hasn’t read your writing before, why should they want to read The Iron Pendulum?

My style of writing has its own voice. Coming from a country filled with African myths and legends and using the experiences whispered to me from different cultures that create my heritage, I enjoy creating something different for my readers. From crime thrillers to romance, children’s stories to poetry, I enjoy challenging myself in different genres. Following my titles will never be boring and I’m sure there will be something there that will appeal to any reader.

What’s one piece of advice you would offer your younger writer self?

Believe in yourself! If I had followed through on some of my earlier work, I would not have lost the momentum of writing and probably would have changed my career sooner rather than later.

What are your interests outside of writing and reading?

I enjoy teaching children how to find their own inner voices and to write from their hearts through my Writer’s Club. Spending time with my family and running after my dog, Henry keeps me happy and gives me a chance to enjoy the forests surrounding our home.
